WIC Week 2025: McKenna Dobrovolny

McKenna Dobrovolny

Ironworkers Local 512
ABOUT McKenna:

I’m McKenna, I’ve been a part of 512 for about two years now, and to say it’s changed my life is an understatement. I had been struggling with what I wanted to do but I knew I couldn’t sit still in an office-like job. That’s when my mom mentioned Ironwork, as I have two uncles who are retired ironworkers. So I looked into it and it sounded like a hard-working, but good career.

When I started, I had zero background in construction whatsoever and was extremely nervous to start, especially being very young. That changed really quickly! The guys were and still are super helpful, both on the job and in class! They teach me all the ins and outs and tricks of the trade any time they can. They never make me feel left out or like I can’t do something just because I’m a woman. They push me to be better everyday, and truly do make me feel a part of the brotherhood and sisterhood.

One of the reasons I joined the union was so I could help provide for my future family one day. It’s also allowed me to do things I never thought possible, like being a homeowner at 22 years old! And knowing I have a great set of benefits behind me is an awesome feeling. It’s a very rewarding career and I love to take pride in my work. It’s made me grow as a person all around and I wouldn’t change it for the world! I’m only half way through the apprenticeship and I can’t wait to see where it takes me!
